Over the last three years Hoya UK has worked in partnership with international eye care charity Orbis, raising £50,000 to support the construction of a new community eye care centre in India.
During this period, employees from across Hoya UK have completed a range of fundraising in order to reach their £50,000 target. This included the Journey for vision initiative which saw 80 staff members collectively walked 5000 miles, the symbolic distance from Wrexham to India, over 19 days.
Other fundraising activities have seen colleagues hike Mount Snowdon, run the London Marathon and complete Tough Mudder events.
Contributions from sales from the company’s MiYOSMART lens, as well as contactless donation terminals, further boosted the total.
The community health care centre, which is known as a Green Vision Centre (GVC), furthers Orbis’ aim to strengthen eye care services in rural India, and demonstrates Hoya’s continued commitment to supporting the advancement of global eye health and tackling avoidable sight loss through sustainable, community-led initiatives.
Hoya Lens UK’s managing director, Martin Batho, said: “I’m hugely proud of what the whole team has achieved. The Orbis Green Vision Centre is a fantastic project and one that will leave a lasting legacy, bringing vital sight care services to many thousands of people over the years and decades to come.”
The new Tura GVC welcomed its first patients last month, following an inauguration ceremony attended by Orbis India delegates, local dignitaries and beneficiaries.
The centre will provide access to eye care services for an estimated 90,000 adults and children within India’s Northeastern state of Meghalaya.
Kate Gannon, director of programme fundraising at Orbis UK, said: “We extend our heartfelt thanks for HOYA's incredible fundraising efforts over the past three years in support of building a new Green Vision Centre in India. HOYA’s commitment will help to bring vital eye care services to a previously underserved area, transforming lives through the gift of sight.”
India has the highest number of people living with blindness and vision impairment in the world.
