Details revealed for Wales sight test remuneration and fees
A statement from the Welsh Government provides detail following an uplift in fees confirmed in October

The Welsh Government has confirmed further details of the general ophthalmic services (GOS) remuneration and fees for 2025 to 2026.
The details have now been shared by the Welsh Government in the Statement of general ophthalmic services remuneration and fee directions.
In Wales, the GOS fee has increased for the 2025–2026 period and is now set at £46.20.
The eye examination service fee for WGOS 2 Band 1 has been set at £72.88, WGOS 2 Band 2 has been set at £55.18, and WGOS 2 Band 3 has been set at £27.07.
The fee set for NHS domiciliary visits is £42.60 for the first and second patients, and £10.66 for third and subsequent patients. Payments are backdated as effective from 1 April 2025.
Agreement has also been reached on payments eligible to optometrists for providing WGOS enhanced optometry services for 2025–2026, backdated to 1 April 2025. This has been outlined in a letter from the Welsh Government and shared by Optometry Wales on its website.
The statement additionally outlines the continuing professional development allowance for education undertaken in 2024.
Optometrists in Wales receive £763.29, independent prescribing optometrists receive £1,529.26, and dispensing opticians receive £422.63.
The allowance for supervisors of pre-registration trainees remains at £7500.
The letters also discuss the Optometry Cluster Collaboratives, which are being established to ensure consistency of engagement, with a duty for practices to participate in Optometry Professional Collaborative meetings. Each optometry practice must attend at least four meetings per financial year and will be reimbursed £288.18 for each attendance, up to a maximum of four.
