The Optical Women’s Association (OWA) has looked back on a successful event celebrating and promoting the achievements of women in the optical industry.

The Global Connection Event took place on the Silmo Talks Stage at Silmo Paris on 26 September, and was facilitated by Nancy Gries, chair of the OWA International Expansion Committee.

Amélie Morel, president of Silmo and director of communications for the eyewear brand, Morel, delivered the opening remarks.

The event featured a panel discussion on technological innovation, artificial intelligence, sustainability, human resources, and vision health, and highlighted the role women play in shaping the optical industry.

The panel included Olga Prenat, from EssilorLuxottica, Kivilcim Erdogan, from Bausch + Lomb, and Atissa Tadjadod, from Silhouette.

Sharing advice for women transforming the sector, Erdogan encouraged attendees: “Claim your seat, be clear about what you’re aiming for, don’t be shy of your colour and emotions, and to be sure to elevate while you’re rising.”

Prenat also emphasised the importance of authenticity and advised: “Be yourself, never give up, be clear of your objectives and mentors.”

With a call to action for the industry, Tadjadod said: “I think we need to make women choose this industry. The more we talk about what this industry has to offer, the more women can enter. Stick to what you’re good at.”

Commenting on the event, Gries said: “It’s clear that women around the globe are making tremendous contributions to optical innovation, and OWA is committed to supporting their growth, connection, and leadership on an international scale.”

The event concluded with a networking session, connecting attendees with OWA International Committee members, to learn more about the organisation’s plans for global expansion.
