Dr Cindy Tromans was formally appointed as president of the World Council of Optometry during the organisation’s virtual general assembly last month (30 September).

Tromans becomes president having served as president-elect since July 2023.

Commenting on her ambitions for the WCO during her term, Tromans emphasised the importance of ensuring that optometry’s voice is both heard and acted upon.

“WCO is the global voice of optometry. And we don’t just say that – we need to act it,” she said.

“We need to ensure that the potential of optometry is understood to provide sustainable, affordable, and equitable eye care,” she added.

Outgoing president, Dr Sandra Block, will continue to serve on the WCO board of directors for the next two years as the immediate past president.

During the assembly meeting, Dr Rajeev Prasad was appointed as president-elect for 2025–2027.

Prasad told attendees: “I am committed to working alongside each one of you to strengthen our shared vision for optometry globally. Together, I’m sure that we will advance eye health, foster collaboration, and create a lasting global impact. I’m really looking forward to working alongside you all in this journey.”

Prasad been on the WCO board of directors since 2021. In 2022, following a governance update at the WCO, he was elected as the Asia Pacific geographic representative for 2023–2025.

In addition to being president-elect to the WCO, Prasad currently serves as secretary general of the Indian Optometry Association, president of Asia Pacific Council of Optometry, and sits on the WCO’s public health committee.
