The British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) will hold the first British Muslim Health Awards on 13 December at the Quaid-E-Azam Grand Ballroom in Birmingham.

Nominations are now open across a range of categories, including Optometrist of the Year, Student of the Year, Employer of the Year and Researcher of the Year.

Individuals do not need to be a BIMA member to be nominated or make a nomination.

BIMA president, Dr Sahira Dar, told OT that the awards would act as a celebration of the contribution of Muslim healthcare workers.

“We want to highlight the vital, yet often overlooked, contribution of Muslim professionals across all areas of health,” she said.

“It’s about creating visibility, encouraging excellence, and fostering future role models in a field that shapes the vision, quite literally, of our communities,” Dar said.

Around one in five optometrists and dispensing opticians are Muslim, while four in 10 student optometrists are Muslim.

Individuals who would like to make a nomination can do so by submitting a 300-word description of their nominee’s achievements through an online form.

Winners will be selected by an independent judging panel according to values-led criteria across four categories: service, impact, integrity and excellence.
