Practices encouraged to join World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week
The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust highlighted the “crucial role” of eye care professionals in the early detection of retinoblastoma ahead of the awareness week from 11–17 May

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is encouraging optometry practices to participate in World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, held from 11–17 May.
The annual event seeks to raise awareness of retinoblastoma and promote early detection and intervention.
CHECT has encouraged practices to help spread the word about retinoblastoma through awareness-raising activities online, in-practice events, and fundraising.
The charity has developed a World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week resource kit tailored for practices, including suggestions and images for social media and guidelines for participating in the campaign.
Pre-made resources for social media are available for practices to share during the awareness week to help disseminate information on retinoblastoma to a wide audience.
Practices could host a Crazy Glasses Day, the charity suggested, using the free downloadable templates, or set up a donation station in the practice to support families affected by retinoblastoma and fund research into prevention and treatment.
Practices can also request CHECT’s signs and symptoms leaflets, which the charity suggests are “instrumental in educating parents about the warning signs of retinoblastoma.”
The charity highlighted: “Optometrists play a crucial role in the early detection of retinoblastoma. Routine eye examinations can reveal early signs of the disease, such as a white pupil or a squint.”
“By actively participating in awareness initiatives, optical practices can educate the public on these critical symptoms, potentially leading to earlier diagnoses and improved outcomes for affected children,” the charity continued.
