The General Optical Council (GOC) has published its corporate strategy for 2025–2030.

A statement from the optical regulator highlighted that the strategy focuses on three strategic objectives: creating fairer and more inclusive eye care services, supporting responsible innovation and protecting the public, and preventing harm through agile regulation.

As part of the first objective relating to inclusive eye care services, the GOC will use research to highlight inequalities facing the public, patients and professionals. The optical regulator will also tackle negative working environments.

A focus on responsible innovation in the second objective will see the optical regulator support registrants to adapt to technological advancements. The GOC will extend regulation to all businesses carrying out restricted activities.

The third objective of preventing harm through agile regulation will involve further investment in research activities, a shift to an anticipatory model of regulation, and changing internal processes to prepare for expected legislative reform.

GOC chief executive and registrar, Leonie Milliner, shared that the new strategy sets out “ambitious goals” for ensuring safe and effective eye care for all.

“By fostering collaboration, embracing innovation, and enhancing our regulatory approach, we aim to improve outcomes for both patients and professionals,” she said.

“While the focus of this strategy is on areas of change, we are also committed to continuous improvement across our core statutory functions such as maintaining the registers, approving qualifications, and managing our fitness to practise operations,” Milliner observed.
