Transitions has revealed the latest addition to its portfolio with the Color Touch lens range of tinted lenses.

The lenses were introduced at the 28th Transitions Academy, held from 3–4 February in Orlando, Florida. The event, themed Hey Future, was attended by more than 1200 delegates from 56 countries.

Color Touch lenes feature subtle tints in gradient or washed styles designed for everyday wear. Both styles transition to full colour shades when activated.

The lenses are available in five Gen S colours: amethyst, amber, sapphire, ruby, and emerald.

Introducing the Colour Touch, Transitions suggested: “It is time to let colour in,” adding that a ‘pop of colour’ is a popular design trend.

The company believes the new style could challenge the norm of having clear lenses indoors and provide additional benefits to wearers in terms of light stability and comfort.

A year-on from the launch of Transitions Gen S, the latest ‘ultra-responsive’ photochromic offering from the company, the Transitions Academy heard insight on the science behind the lenses and how the product has been received by consumers, with 11.1 million people benefiting from Gen S.

Nichola Barbier, SVP and general manager of Transitions Optical, shared that, according to surveys, 83% of eye care professionals believe that Transitions Gen S will change the patient base for dynamic lenses.

Brian O’Neill, global vice president of innovation, technology, operations and quality at Transitions Optical, gave an overview of clinical trials from the first year of Gen S, featuring insight from Professor Mark Rosenfield from the State University of New York College of Optometry, Professor Pablo Artal from the University of Murcia, and Dr Chris Lievens from the Southern College of Optometry.

Delegates heard patient and practitioner testimonials on the performance of the Gen S lenses.

Speakers also discussed the RayBan Meta, which saw sales of more than one million frames in 2024, and how pairing these with Transitions lenses enables a seamless experience for wearers of the smart eyewear.

Chrystel Barranger, president of Transitions Optical and EssilorLuxottica professional solutions EMEA, reflected on the different use-cases of the RayBan Meta and the diverse profiles of patients who benefit from the technology whether for hands-free connectivity, or for accessibility.

Nuance Audio also made an appearance at the event. Acquired by EssilorLuxottica, the technology embeds an invisible hearing device into eyewear to offer a new form of hearing solution to people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

On the Transitions Academy stage, EssilorLuxottica announced that it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration and achieved CE marking under the Medical Devices Regulation in the EU, for the Nuance Audio Glasses.

The Academy also explored how medical technologies and artificial intelligence are reshaping the future of eye care, enabling better patient outcomes. AI tools are supporting diabetic retinopathy screenings to preserve sight, while photobiomodulation therapy aids the early detection and management of conditions, the Transitions experts suggested.

Meanwhile, teleoptometry and wearables such as smart eyewear are increasing access to care and enabling remote monitoring.

Barranger said: “It is clear we are entering a new era. Just like that – glasses are about to become our favourite health and life connector.”
