Glaucoma UK launches research grants programme
A total of £370,000 is set to be awarded as grants for research projects in the charity’s largest-ever funding round
10 January 2025
Glaucoma UK has launched a new research programme, supporting research to improve the understanding, treatment, and care of glaucoma.
The reshaped programme will fund researchers and study proposals that have the potential to “make a significant impact in the field of glaucoma.”
The charity has launched its largest-ever funding round, with a total of £370,000 to be awarded, £250,000 of which has been allocated to award grants for research projects worth up to £100,000.
Researchers looking at any aspect of glaucoma care, such as improved diagnosis, monitoring, treatment or management of glaucoma, are invited to apply for the 2025 Research Grants Programme.
Funding of £120,000 is also available for a three-year PhD studentship. Applications will open this month and close in April, with the decision to be announced in June.
Joanna Hodgkinson, head of research at Glaucoma UK, said: “We’re delighted to be introducing our new research grants in 2025. The re-launch of our PhD studentship funding enables us to continue investing in the next generation of glaucoma researchers. By revamping our project grant funding we’re confident we’re going to be supporting the best quality research.”
Hodgkinson added: “It’s critical the voice of people with glaucoma is heard throughout the planning, delivery and dissemination of glaucoma research, so we’re proud to introduce greater prominence for this in our new grant rounds.”
The initiatives are designed to support Glaucoma UK in its charitable mission of ending preventable glaucoma sight loss, Hodgkinson said.
In 2024, Glaucoma UK recognised a milestone 50th anniversary. OT spoke to chief executive, Joanne Creighton, about the charity’s achievements and goals. Watch the interview below.
