VCHP seeking more volunteers for 2025
The charity is urging the optical profession to get behind its cause over the coming year
20 December 2024
Vision Case for Homeless People (VCHP) is encouraging optometrists to put aside “a few hours each month” for volunteering in 2025.
The charity, which provides eye care and dispensing to homeless people across the UK, is aiming to reach its target of 24 clinics by 2029.
“We have ambitious plans for the growth of our service,” chair of VCHP, Elaine Styles (pictured), said.
Homeless charity Crisis has reported an 8% increase in homelessness over the past year, Styles noted.
“Our service is highly-valued and we want to reach an even greater number of people in the months ahead,” she added.
VCHP’s newest clinic, its 11th, opened in Plymouth in the autumn.
A grassroots opportunity
Current VCHP volunteers have been sharing their experiences in order to encourage others to join them.
Dispensing optician, Claire Wier, has been volunteering as clinic manager at VCHP’s Sifa Fireside clinic in Birmingham for the past three years.
During that time, the Birmingham team has identified a macular hole, suspected glaucoma, cataracts, and blepharitis.
“It really goes to the grass roots of why we went into optics – to help people to see,” Weir said.
“I love the role – we are such a friendly team and the service we provide is so appreciated.”
She added: “I do understand people’s nervousness about volunteering, but you immediately get to see the bigger picture.
“I come out of the clinic sessions feeling a different person as we have really helped, and it gives you a greater appreciation of your own life.”
