A total of 74 pairs of spectacles have been dispensed to local homeless people during the 12 months since Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP) opened a clinic in Bristol.

Those who have used the clinic, which is delivered by volunteer optometrists and dispensing opticians, have sought eye care because of difficulties accessing High Street opticians.

Speaking about volunteering at the clinic over the last year, optometrist Tom Boyd said: “I started volunteering as soon as it opened having been inspired by seeing how VCHP have filled a gap in care for a group of people very much in need. My first clinic was emotional, grounding, humbling, purposeful and deeply satisfying.”

Boyd added: “My fond memories of volunteering are many, including a very high myopic patient who had not had glasses for six months and was functionally visually impaired. When he picked up his spectacles he was able get on with his life again. I encourage others to get involved, as you get so much back.”

Since the clinic opened, lenses and glazing have been donated by Shamir, which has supported other VCHP clinics since 2011.

A spokesperson for Shamir UK said: “We feel that if you are in a position to give back or help then it’s the right thing to do. Our slogan is perfect vision, personal touch.”
