Moorfields Eye Charity has received a donation of £1 million towards the new eye health centre currently under construction, Oriel.

A joint initiative between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity, the new integrated eye health centre is set to open in 2027.

The donation from The Schroder Foundation and Family will enhance education, and promote learning and collaborations for researchers, clinicians, trainees, and students, Moorfields Eye Charity said.

Oriel will bring together experts in eye research, as well as providing education spaces for teaching on eye health.

Robert Dufton, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Charity, said: “Thanks to the support of forward-thinking philanthropists such as The Schroder Foundation and Family, experts at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, across the UK and worldwide benefit from this innovative learning environment within the new eye health centre – ultimately improving patient outcomes.”

The new centre will feature education spaces for face-to-face and online learning, enabling hands-on practice, informal discussions, multidisciplinary meetings, and lectures. The rooms will be equipped with audio-visual technology for immersive learning.

Moorfields Eye Charity said the donation would support the creation of a “learning environment for the eye health experts of the future.”

The gift from The Schroder Foundation and Family was made in memory of the late Bruno Schroder, reflecting interests in and support of education, collaboration, and eye health.

The trustees of The Schroder Foundation and Family said: “We hope these facilities will enhance education and collaboration, and through the sharing of new discoveries and breakthroughs benefit millions of people with sight loss worldwide.”
