The person appointed to the post will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering a coordinated approach to client care. The primary aim of the Primary Care Eye Services is to promote good ophthalmic health and quality of life for all categories of patients who attend the eye clinic. The service is based in primary care facilities within Tipperary South IHA.
Patients are referred to the Community Ophthalmology services by Public Health Nurses, School Nurses, Community Medical Doctors, General Practitioners, Ophthalmologists, Paediatricians, Optometrists and Disability Services.
The Optometrist therefore has a vital role to play in providing a comprehensive and high-quality eye care service to patients in conjunction with other members of Tipperary South.
This team is comprised of multi-disciplinary team members. The successful candidate will provide both adult and paediatric eye care within Tipperary South Primary Care Services.
The successful candidate may be further trained in Glaucoma, Medical Retina and Pre and postoperative Cataract Care.
The Tipperary South Primary Care Ophthalmology Service is located in Clonmel and the person appointed to the post will be expected to work across Tipperary South.

The Optometrist will play a vital role in providing a comprehensive and high-quality eye care to patients across Tipperary South.
The successful candidates will be expected to participate in the implementation of the National Primary Care Eye Services Review Group Report published in 2017, and in any it may bring to the existing service.
The salary scale for the post as at 01/06/2026 is: €65,197, €66,587, €68,021, €69,442, €70,864, €72,358, €73,935, €75,506, €76,767
New appointees to any grade start at the minimum point of the scale. Incremental credit will be applied for recognised relevant service in Ireland and abroad (Department of Health Circular 2/2011). Incremental credit is normally granted on appointment, in respect of previous experience in the Civil Service, Local Authorities, Health Service and other Public Service Bodies and Statutory Agencies.
