Five steps to getting to know the new Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism
Optometrist and professional affairs consultant at Johnson & Johnson, Marie-Therese Hall, shares her takeaways on the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism

Earlier this year, Johnson & Johnson launched a new contact lens in the UK and Ireland. For optometrist and professional affairs consultant at Johnson & Johnson, Marie-Therese Hall, the new contact lens represents “a shift away from compromise, in a category that has historically been challenging.”
She explained that “by combining modality, design simplicity and proven technologies” the contact lens enables practitioners to better meet the needs of presbyopic astigmats. “It provides greater confidence in achieving successful outcomes and opens the door to fitting patients who may previously have been difficult to manage,” she told OT.
Here, Hall shares five steps for getting to know the new Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism.
1 The first and only of its kind1
“For many practitioners, the presbyopic astigmatic category is one that has been underserved for a long time. As astigmatic patients move into presbyopia, there has historically been a compromise in how they can be managed with contact lenses. In particular, daily disposable options have not been available in a multifocal toric format, which has limited both practitioner choice and patient flexibility.
“This has often meant that patients needed to move into monthly lenses, even if that didn’t suit their lifestyle. For those who only wanted to wear lenses occasionally, this created a disconnect between clinical need and lifestyle need. It also meant that some patients opted out of contact lenses altogether.
“The availability of a daily disposable multifocal toric lens changes the dynamic. It allows practitioners to offer a modality that aligns with modern expectations around convenience, hygiene and flexibility.
“Overall, it opens up a new opportunity not only for existing wearers, but also for patients who may not previously have been considered suitable candidates”

2 The single -1.00D cylinder design
“The cylinder design has been developed to deliver effective correction across a broad range of astigmatic prescriptions, specifically targeting patients between -1.00 and -1.75 dioptres of astigmatism. Rather than introducing multiple cylinder powers that require ongoing refinement, the design takes a more streamlined approach.
“In traditional toric multifocal fitting, practitioners often need to navigate several variables at once. This can include adjusting cylinder power, axis and multifocal elements, sometimes across multiple trial lenses. That process can be time-consuming. By simplifying the cylinder offering to a single power that still covers a wide range, the fitting process becomes more straightforward. There are fewer decision points and fewer iterative changes required, while still maintaining clinical effectiveness.
“This does not represent a limitation in performance, but a simplification. It allows practitioners to approach fittings with greater confidence, knowing that the design has been optimised to deliver results across a defined patient group. 92% of presbyopic eyes will be covered between both the multifocal and the multifocal toric products together.” 2
3 Simplified fitting with Simplifit
“A key part of the simplified fitting journey is the use of digital tools, particularly the Acuvue Simplifit calculator. This online platform guides practitioners through the fitting process by prompting them to input key patient information, including prescription, ocular dominance, age and reading add.
“Once this information is entered, the calculator uses an algorithm to recommend the most appropriate initial lens, as well as any enhancements that may be required. This structured approach removes much of the guesswork that can be associated with fitting multifocal toric lenses.
“Historically, practitioners may have relied on paper fitting guides or personal experience, which could lead to inconsistencies or inefficiencies. In contrast, a digital tool provides a single, reliable point of reference that is always accessible and up to date.”
Seeing the effect directly often has a stronger impact than verbal explanation alone
4 The astigmatism demonstration tool
“Instead of a trial lens kit that would only have covered 25% of the prescription range, Johnson & Johnson has developed an innovative astigmatism demonstration tool, known as the flipper, which can be used with existing Acuvue Oasys 1-Day Multifocal trial lens fitting banks. It is a physical tool that incorporates cylinder power and can be rotated to align with different axes, allowing practitioners to simulate the effect of correction in real time. When used alongside the Acuvue Simplifit calculator to determine the required trial lenses, the flipper demonstrates to the patient the vision they can expect ahead of receiving their trial lenses. It can also increase confidence in the recommended solution.
“The astigmatism demonstration tool, together with the Simplifit calculator, can support efficient use of chair time with accurate trial lens selection – over nine out of ten patients can be successfully fitted with the first pair at the first visit.*3 The flipper also helps to reduce waste and save on fitting bank space.”
5 Four technologies in one
“The lens combines four established technologies into a single design, bringing together features that practitioners may already know and trust. Each plays a specific role in supporting both comfort and visual performance.
TearStable technology is focused on maintaining tear film stability, helping to reduce evaporation4,5 and support comfort throughout the day;*3 the OptiBlue light filter helps to manage blue-violet light,^#5,6 reducing scatter and visual disturbances such as halos or starbursts;##4,5 the Pupil Optimised Design underpins the multifocal performance, taking into account how pupil size changes with age and refractive error,7 and the Eyelid Stabilised Design ensures that the lens remains correctly oriented on the eye,8 supporting stable astigmatic correction.”
Marie-Therese’s three tips for introducing the lens in practice
- Start conversations early with presbyopic astigmatic patients about new options
- Review existing contact lens wearers to identify opportunities for improvement
- Use available tools to build patient understanding and confidence.

A good lens, no doubt about it. The handling tint is putting folk off any type Oasys Max lens. The cost is also pretty staggering. Monovision it is for most patients.
