The new president of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO), Clive Marchant, was inaugurated at a ceremony on 15 April.

Mr Marchant, who is a dispensing and contact lens optician, as well as the director of Colin Lee Opticians, succeeds Fiona Anderson in the role, who takes on an advisory board member role with ABDO.

During the ceremony, which took place at the ABDO Optrafair Dinner at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, Mr Marchant praised Ms Anderson for doing “a fantastic job during her term of office.”

“I now look forward to working with Jo Holmes in her new role as vice president and the rest of the ABDO board and staff, supporting and enhancing the role of dispensing opticians,” he added.

Speaking about the year ahead, Mr Marchant highlighted that the first set of contact lens opticians will be accredited to provide minor eye conditions services.

He added that demand for training has led to the upcoming opening of its National Resource Centre in Birmingham.

Mr Marchant explained: “Opening this summer, it will be a centre of excellence to be used for the benefit of our members along with all the optical profession and our industry partners. We look forward to welcoming all to the centre very soon.”

Special awards were also presented on the night to former managing director of Stepper UK, Richard Crook, who received the Medal of Excellence. The Hamblin Memorial Prize was presented to ABDO board member and contact lens optician, Keith Cavaye.
