A series of webinars designed to support optometrists in training to build confidence and develop professional skills as they prepare to enter practice are now available on the OT website.

Located in our Education library, the three webinars are hosted by AOP education lead, Dr Byki Huntjens, and were first presented as live sessions throughout June.

It is the first time OT and the AOP have hosted a series of webinars dedicated to optometry trainees, with the sessions established following feedback from the Association's student representatives.

The three webinars covered employability insight, professionalism advice, and wellbeing support.

Speaking about the webinar series, AOP membership benefits officer, Rita Davids, said: “This new webinar series grew out of conversations with our student representative committee, who highlighted the value of practical support as students prepare for life beyond university.

“We know that the transition from student to practitioner can feel like a significant step, so we hope this dedicated webinar series helps students build confidence, develop professional skills, and explore the opportunities available to them.”

Davids added: “We are pleased to make the sessions available to watch on-demand, so students can watch them at their convenience and continue learning. Through this new initiative, we are continuing our commitment to supporting students throughout their studies and as they begin their careers.”

In the first webinar, entitled Stand out and get hired, optometrist Dr Carolina Kunnem and Huntjens explored what employers look for, how to build relevant experience and where to focus your efforts early in your optometry journey.

The second webinar, entitled Think like a professional, saw the AOP’s Drs Peter Hampson, Ian Besley and Huntjens discuss where things could go wrong in practice, and how to reduce risks.

Concluding the series, Mind, body, practice, health psychologist, Professor Fiona Fylan, explored how behaviours, habits, and workplace pressures can shape the wellbeing of eye care professionals.

AOP Councillor representing undergraduate student optometrists, Juwaria Khan, who attended the Stand out and get hired webinar, said she found it “extremely helpful as it focused on practical advice that students can use right now and apply in the future.”

“It was particularly nice hearing different perspectives being discussed as it offered fresh views on how to get a head start and ways to level up in your career,” she added.

Khan told OT that the webinar provided “many valuable nuggets of information.”

“Having access to this level of support for free from the AOP was fantastic,” she added.

All three webinars are available to view on demand for AOP members.
