A Specsavers practice in North Yorkshire has established an out-of-hours clinic to provide patients with hypersensitivities with access to eye care in a supportive environment.

The Malton-based practice introduced the service in October. Following a successful first clinic, the practice will run two additional out-of-hours sessions this month.

The service is designed to provide a quieter environment for patients. During each clinic the team has made a range of sensory toys available, including fidget poppers, twisty bands, and squeeze balls.

The service runs from 5.15–7pm and involves all standard eye exam services, including optical coherence tomography.

Rachel Patience, assistant manager at Specsavers Malton, said: “We understand that healthcare settings can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming, making communication challenging, especially for those struggling with sensory overload or neurodiverse conditions. That’s why we decided to create an alternative space where people can feel more comfortable and calmer.”

The Specsavers practice confirmed to OT, “these clinics were our first endeavour with out-of-hours services, but it won’t be our last. We are flexible to our patients’ needs, and hope to arrange more in the future.”

“We’re excited to welcome the community to our second after-hours clinic,” Patience added. “We want Specsavers to be an environment where visitors find it easy to share any concerns, easing the usual pressure of a typical visit.”
