The General Optical Council (GOC) has opened applications for two positions on its Council in what it notes will be an “important” few years for the regulator.

The GOC is seeking to appoint a new registrant member and a lay member to its Council, with applications open until midnight on 17 November.

The new members will replace lay member, Clare Minchington, and registrant member, Roshni Sharma, who will complete their eight-year tenures as Council members in March 2025.

New appointments will commence on 1 April 2025, with initial tenures not exceeding four years.

The Council governs the GOC and sets its strategic direction, and successful candidates will contribute to Council by exercising oversight, ensuring effective corporate governance, and making high-level policy decisions.

The GOC said: “The successful candidates will be able to operate strategically and impartially; listen, communicate, and influence effectively; demonstrate judgement, and inspire confidence and support amongst the GOC’s stakeholders.”

The regulator highlighted that the next few years are “particularly important” as the GOC begins its new five-year strategic plan to 2030.

Candidates might have experience as a charity trustee, or as a non-executive in a public body or private company.

The GOC highlighted that it is “keen that Council’s membership reflects the communities it serves as a regulator and so is seeking a registrant and a lay member who will add value to and diversify the perspective of the Council.”

The role is part-time and requires a commitment of approximately two to three days per month, including time spent preparing for meetings.

An annual fee of £13,962 is paid to Council members, in line with the GOC’s member fees policy and member fee schedule.

Information packs on the roles and recruitment processes are available for the registrant council member position and the lay member position.

Interested candidates with any queries about the position can contact the GOC quoting reference GOC05/24.
