A 67-year-old patient with altered vision following a fall was found to have a dislocated lens
25 January 2018
A woman who presented to an orthopaedic ward with a fractured tibia and altered vision following a fall was found to have a dislocated lens.
Birmingham specialist trainee ophthalmologist, Rupal Morjaria, and colleagues described the case in BMJ Case Reports.
The clinicians noted the patient’s best corrected vision was hand movements in the left eye and 6/6 in the right eye.
A clinical examination revealed a dislocated lens in the pupillary aperture. Urgent surgery was arranged to remove the vitreous gel of the eye and replace the natural lens with an intraocular lens implant.
Ms Morjaria highlighted that a displaced lens should be considered in patients who presented following head trauma from a fall.
“Treated in a timely manner, it is a reversible cause of vision loss,” she shared.
