The Hakim Group chief executive Imran Hakim has won two awards at the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 UK awards (1 July).

The Hakim Group CEO and optometrist received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 North Overall award, while also being recognised as Scale Up Entrepreneur of the Year.

The awards, which took place at Manchester’s Imperial War Museum North, celebrated entrepreneurs who have made a positive impact on society and the economy in the North, as well as London and the South, the Midlands and Scotland.

Former EY Entrepreneur of the Year winners include low cost airline easyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, investor Peter Jones, who started Phones International Group, and founding partner of Innocent Drinks, Richard Reed.

Founded in 2006, the Hakim Group’s portfolio of independent opticians has grown across the UK and Ireland.

Speaking after the win, Mr Hakim said: “These awards may have my name on them, but they are testament to the tireless work put in by our independent practice owners and practice teams, as well as the support team at Hakim HQ. I was sat alongside some of the biggest and most respected businesses in the country, so for us to be named the overall winner ahead of them is something I’m immensely proud of. It’s our people who have allowed this success to be possible so I couldn’t be happier that their commitment has been recognised in this manner.”

Partner and EY Entrepreneur of the Year leader in the North, Victoria Price, said: “Imran is a very worthy winner – he has built a support team that has been with the business since the start and coupled with his visionary leadership it is not difficult to see why his business has thrived with a proven track record of generating growth post acquisition.”
