What’s happening in… Contact lenses?
Comfort was the name of the game when OT spoke with contact lens manufacturers and suppliers about recent trends and launches

Ingredients for comfort
The Bausch + Lomb Ultra One Day has been highlighted for standing up to the demands of everyday life for contact lens wearers.
Featuring ComfortFeel Technology, the contact lens is designed to release a proprietary combination of ingredients during lens wear that help maintain the tear film and ocular surface homeostasis, the company said.
Ingredients include osmoprotectants, moisturisers and electrolytes, which are integrated into the lens material and released through passive diffusion during lens wear. Diffusion continues until the difference in concentration of ingredients inside the lens compared to the environment outside the lens is small.
The ComfortFeel Technology works with the Advanced MoistureSeal Technology behind the kalifilcon A material.
A large multi-site study with habitual silicone hydrogel soft contact lens wearers between the ages of 18 and 40 reported a positive wearing experience with Bausch + Lomb Ultra One Day, with 90% finding the lenses delivered comfortable vision throughout the day.

No compromise
Alcon has added to its portfolio of Water Surface Lenses this year with the Total30 Multifocal contact lens.
The company suggested Water Surface Lenses can help eye care professionals reduce chair time and grow their contact lens business.
A 2021 survey of contact lens wearers found that 80% would be open to discussing upgrading their lenses to improve their wearing experience, with 76% willing to pay more for innovation.
Buki Anthony, professional education and development manager at Alcon UK & Ireland, said: “When it comes to contact lenses, wearers expect more than just good vision. They no longer want a compromise; they need lenses they can comfortably wear all day, without feeling tired or irritated. That’s the real goal.”

Lens care
Positive Impact has launched Cleadew, a range of CE-marked contact lens care solutions for all contact lens types.
The manufacturer behind Cleadew, Ophtecs, utilises povidone-iodine (PVP-I) for the safe and effective care of contact lenses, displaying high disinfecting efficacy against bacteria, viruses, and acanthamoeba, while ensuring safety for the corneal epithelium.
Cleadew Soft, SL and GP are patented PVP-I based systems for soft lenses, as well as scleral and RGP lenses. Cleadew GP is ideally suited to cleaning and disinfecting ortho-K lenses.
The solutions are already compliant with the forthcoming regulatory changes through the Medical Device Regulations.
Nick Atkins, Positive Impact’s managing director, commented on the launch of the range, describing it as “packed with innovative new technologies to deliver superior disinfection, enhanced cleaning and deposit prevention, as well as improved wettability and comfort for all contact lens types.”

Presbyopia consensus
The British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) released a new global consensus report providing evidence-based guidance on presbyopia.
The BCLA CLEAR Presbyopia report, published in Contact Lens and the Anterior Eye, includes seven papers, featuring the work of 84 experts from 18 countries.
Hear from BCLA chief executive officer, Luke Stevens-Burt, and project executive, Lynn White, on key findings from the report here.

Team training
OT has developed a portfolio of educational content to support the whole practice team to brush up on a range of skills relating to contact lenses.
New Skills guides introduce viewers to assessing and grading the fit of rigid gas permeable contact lenses, as well as soft contact lenses, and the use of topographers for fitting.
Visit OT’s Education library for access to Skills guides on these topics and many more.
