This session looks at common clinical, ethical and regulatory scenarios encountered by locum optometrists, and how to manage them effectively in practice. The scenarios are based on the most common queries received by the AOP’s clinical and regulatory team, with a focus on managing risk for both patients and practitioners.
Learning outcomes
- Practitioners will identify strategies to ensure the delivery of safe care to patients (s.11)
- Practitioners will recognise the importance of maintaining good clinical records (s.8).

Aishah Patel
Aishah qualified as an optometrist in 2010 and has since gained extensive experience across a range of practice settings and within hospital optometry. She gained professional certificates in medical retina and glaucoma, the independent prescribing qualification, and accreditation in diabetic screening and grading. Aishah is also a WOPEC lead assessor and a stage 1 assessor for the College of Optometrists. She currently serves as a clinical advisor for the AOP and practises within community optometry.
