Webinar 3: Lenses, lasers and locums: keeping up with modern cataract and refractive surgery
This session provides a practical overview of contemporary intraocular lens (IOL) options and refractive surgery techniques used in modern cataract and refractive practice. It explores the main IOL categories highlighting their optical principles, visual outcomes, and trade-offs, including contrast sensitivity, range of vision, glare and halos.
The session also reviews current refractive procedures, outlining patient suitability, the underlying techniques, and expected outcomes.
Clinical application is integrated throughout, with a focus on the optometrist's role before and after surgery. Attendees will learn what to assess during pre-operative consultations, how to set realistic patient expectations, and how to recognise common post-operative presentations, including residual refractive error, posterior capsule opacification, dry eye disease, and visual disturbances. The session also highlights how optometrists can support surgical planning and optimise patient outcomes throughout the refractive surgery pathway.
Learning outcomes
- Practitioners will be able to differentiate between contemporary IOL options, and current refractive procedures, and explain the indications, visual benefits and trade-offs to patients (s.2)
- Practitioners will identify opportunities for optometric input before refractive surgery and communicate how these can support surgical planning and patient outcomes (s.2)
- Practitioners will recognise common post-operative presentations following refractive lens surgery and identify when reassurance, management or referral is appropriate (s.7).

With more than 20 years' experience in optometry, Purvi is head of optometry at OCL Vision, where she leads a team delivering world-class patient care, specialising in laser eye surgery, refractive lens exchange and dry eye management.Since qualifying in 2004, Purvi has worked across High Street practice and hospital optometry, developing particular expertise in complex vision correction. She qualified as an independent prescriber in 2020 and established OCL Vision's successful dry eye clinic, combining the latest evidence-based treatments with patient education to deliver effective care.
Alongside her clinical work, Purvi is a passionate educator and advocate for closer collaboration between optometry and ophthalmology. She represents the College of Optometrists on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' Refractive Surgery Advisory Board, serves on the advisory board of COOKIE magazine, and is a regular speaker at professional events for both optometrists and ophthalmologists.
