Optometry Today (OT), in partnership with Glaukos and the AOP, are pleased to provide this webinar.
The session will provide an overview of interventional glaucoma management, with a particular focus on the opportunities to intervene at the time of cataract surgery to improve long-term patient outcomes. Designed for community optometrists, the session will explore recent innovations in glaucoma care and enhance clinical understanding of evolving treatment pathways.
The presentation will also examine the relationship between treatment adherence and disease progression, highlighting the importance of early identification, timely referral, and consideration of glaucoma management during the cataract referral process. Attendees will gain practical insights to better support glaucoma patients throughout their clinical journey.
Learning outcomes
- Practitioners will recognise current interventional glaucoma management strategies, including opportunities for treatment at the time of cataract surgery, and apply this knowledge to support appropriate clinical decision-making and patient care, relative to their scope of practice (s.5)
- Practitioners will be able to recognise the importance of timely communication, referral and collaborative care in the management of glaucoma patients, relative to their scope of practice (s.10).

Amun Sachdev
Amun is a consultant ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery and glaucoma. He has practices within the Wye Valley NHS Trust and Border Health Alliance and has a private practice at The Wye Clinic in Herefordshire. Amun studied medicine at Merton College, at the University of Oxford and completed specialist ophthalmology training while working within many of the hospitals in the West Midlands and then completed a prestigious fellowship post in Bristol for sub-specialist training in glaucoma.
Over the course of his training, he has developed expertise in complex cataract surgery and undertakes different types of interventional glaucoma management, so that he can offer bespoke care to each individual patient. He is passionate about optimising patient care through promoting links between primary and secondary care and educating the next generation of optometrists and ophthalmologists.
Darren Smith
Darren studied optometry at UMIST, qualifying in 2003 and moved to Ludlow in 2007 to open his first practice with Specsavers. He later became a partner in the Leominster and Hereford Specsavers practices, with Ledbury Specsavers opening in 2017.
Darren has served as chair of Herefordshire LOC since 2011, working alongside forward-thinking optometrists, dispensing opticians and ophthalmologists to help establish Herefordshire as a leader in optometry-led community-based services. He has also achieved the College of Optometrists higher certificate in medical retina.
In 2024, he became a founding member of Border Health Alliance, an independent treatment centre focused on delivering high-quality and timely cataract surgery and YAG capsulotomies in Herefordshire through collaboration between highly skilled local optometrists and consultant ophthalmologists.
