ABDO issues Christmas eye health advice

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has highlighted the common make-up mistakes that can cause eye infections as it shares advice on how to avoid issues during the Christmas period.

ABDO’s own research found that 44% of women have left eye make-up on overnight at least once, while 28% use products that are out of date and 27% do not regularly clean their brushes.

Contact lens optician Diane Nash explained: “Not removing eye make-up daily, using a specific eye make-up remover or regularly cleaning any application brushes used will increase the risk of a bacterial eye infection, which is also true for if you do not replace make-up as often as recommended on the packaging.”

Ms Nash added that make-up should not be applied inside the lash line in order to optimise the tear film and avoid recurrent dryness.

The survey also found that 43% of UK women would visit the opticians if they experienced discomfort in their eyes. ABDO highlighted that anyone with eye concerns should visit their local opticians.
