Melcare has launched the Optimel Manuka range of honey products, which includes eye drops and a gel for patients with chronic dry eye, blepharitis, or irritated eyes.
The products respectively contain 16.5% and 98% pharmaceutical grade honey from bees of the leptospermum species which aids lid-margin hygiene by limiting bacterial growth, according to the company.
Melcare shared that its Optimel range provides a temporary low pH, hyperosmotic environment, which is associated with spontaneous tearing and autonomic blinking that rapidly displaces the honey to the eyelid margin while flushing the eye surface.
Through the hydrocolloid gum used in the drops and gel, the tear film and its lubricating effect on the ocular surface is improved when applied in order to reduce redness for patients with chronic dry eye.
