Bone-like growth causes retinal detachment

New Delhi clinicians have described discovering a bone-like growth that caused a 38-year-old patient’s retina to detach.

Writing in BMJ Case Reports, the authors highlighted how the woman presented to the hospital outpatient department with a gradual, painless diminution of vision in her right eye over the past month.

Her visual acuity was limited to the perception of light in the affected eye while she had 20/20 vision in her left eye.

Fundus examination and sonography revealed an exudative retinal detachment caused by a choroidal osteoma.

The clinicians emphasised that one of the characteristic features of choroidal osteoma is in situ calcification, which can be diagnosed using ultrasonography or a CT scan.
