Optometry Today (OT), in partnership with the AOP, is pleased to present a day of AI-focused education.

The event features a series of online sessions offering practical insights into the opportunities, limitations and evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in optometry.

The programme includes four webinars, each providing one interactive CPD point. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field, building confidence and exchanging knowledge with peers. Delegates may attend the full programme or choose individual sessions that best match their clinical interests.

Webinar: Walking the tightrope of professionalism at the technology frontier

This session explores the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape surrounding artificial intelligence, examining both the profession-specific considerations for optometry and the wider frameworks that apply to AI in healthcare. It will consider how optometrists can embrace the opportunities offered by AI while maintaining professional accountability and avoiding common regulatory pitfalls.

Learning outcomes

  • Practitioners will identify the professional, ethical and regulatory responsibilities associated with the use of AI in optometric practice, applying these principles to support safe, patient-centred care (s.11, s.14)
  • Practitioners will recognise how to apply current regulatory and governance principles to the adoption of AI technologies, ensuring appropriate oversight, record keeping and risk management within clinical practice (s.8, s.12).

Dr Peter Hampson

Peter HampsonPeter is an optometrist with over 20 years’ experience of the optical sector and is the clinical and professional director at the Association of Optometrists. He holds a doctor of optometry qualification from Aston University, having completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Bradford. His early doctoral research focussed on using AI to aid diagnosis in optometric practice.

Peter is the co-chair of the optical sector information and IT committee as well as a specialist postgraduate module leader at Cardiff University. He is a former expert witness with extensive knowledge of clinical negligence in optometric practice and regularly lectures and delivers education events related to this area of optometry.
