Optometry Today (OT), in partnership with the AOP, is pleased to present a day of AI-focused education.
The event features a series of online sessions offering practical insights into the opportunities, limitations and evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in optometry.
The programme includes four webinars, each providing one interactive CPD point. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field, building confidence and exchanging knowledge with peers. Delegates may attend the full programme or choose individual sessions that best match their clinical interests.

Webinar: AI-supported clinical diagnostics
This lecture looks at how AI can be used to support clinical decision-making in eye care, with a focus on macular disease and glaucoma. It reviews the current evidence for AI-assisted detection and monitoring of macular disease, while considering the evidence for AI in glaucoma risk stratification. The webinar will also consider the potential role of AI tools in the NHS 10-year plan to tackle the rising prevalence of age-related eye disease. The session also looks briefly towards oculomics: the use of routine retinal imaging to detect markers of systemic disease.
Finally, the webinar will explore: how AI is regulated and approved for clinical use; how software is classified and risk-categorised as a medical device; what regulatory approval means; and where clinical and legal responsibility sits when AI clinical technology supports patient care.

- Practitioners will recognise the current evidence for AI-assisted detection of macular disease and glaucoma (s.5)
- Practitioners will recognise the potential of oculomics for detecting systemic disease from retinal imaging (s.5, s.7)

Michael Horler
Michael is optometry consultant at Cascader Ltd, a Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL deep tech spinout developing clinical artificial intelligence products to transform the diagnosis and management of eye disease across primary and secondary care.
With over 30 years’ experience across clinical optometry, ophthalmology, education, and leadership, Michael has been a consistent advocate for the advancement of the profession – with a focus on interprofessional collaboration and the development of enhanced patient pathways between primary and secondary care. He is a fellow of the College of Optometrists, a College Council member and a member of the College's AI expert advisory group.
At Cascader, Michael leads the development of AI-powered clinical decision support tools designed to empower optometrists – enabling earlier detection, smarter triage, and more confident clinical decision-making at the point of care.
