In response to the coronavirus pandemic, suppliers have been producing slit lamp breath shields to provide extra protection for optometrists and patients
Grafton Optical has produced a universal slit lamp breath guard in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak to help maintain distance requirements for infection control. The guards are made from 2mm clear perspex and are designed to fit over the slit lamp eyepieces of most models. Grafton Optical suggests the product leaves enough room to adjust the eyepiece pupillary distance, allows access to the slit lamp joystick, and makes it easier to use the Volk lenses.
Star Optical has introduced a slit lamp droplet breath shield, utilising laser-cut transparent perspex with rounded edges. The computer-aided design was created with input from ophthalmologists and medical professionals to comply with the latest clinical guidelines from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists on COVID-19. The universal design means it can be easily installed onto different slit-lamp types, removed and cleaned.
BIB Ophthalmic Instruments has launched the new BIB Universal Slit Lamp Breath Guard, made from Optical Clear Acrylic, aiming to minimise the risk of infection by protecting eye health professionals and patients from respiratory pathogens spread by droplets. The universal design means the product can fit all makes and types of slit lamps and is easily removable. The non-flex material can fit easily over oculars, the company suggests, without the need to fix or screw in place.
Haag-Streit Diagnostics has created a downloadable breath shield template for its slit lamps. The template, offered for free, enables clinicians to create a larger breath shield themselves and works in conjunction with the original breath protecting shield. The template is suitable for use with BQ 900, BP 900, BI 900 and BM 900 slit lamps with a different template for each slit lamp model.
