Session 3: 0.01% atropine for myopia control – from evidence to everyday practice
This CPD session will provide an overview of childhood myopia management, beginning with a brief reminder of why addressing the condition early is important in reducing the lifetime risk of ocular disease and visual impairment. It will explore effective ways of communicating these risks to patients and their families, supporting informed decision-making and engagement with management strategies.
The session will then focus on identifying children at risk of myopia progression, alongside a review of the key clinical tests used in assessment and monitoring. A central component will be the use of low-concentration atropine for managing progressive myopia in children, including its mechanism of action, the current clinical evidence supporting its efficacy, potential side effects and approaches to managing rebound. Practical considerations will also be covered, with specific reference to its licensed use in the UK.
Finally, the session will look ahead to improving access to myopia management, exploring potential future NHS pathways and what these developments could mean for optometry practice and the wider profession. Particular emphasis will be placed on equity of access and why it is a critical consideration in delivering effective, inclusive eye care.
