In Memoriam: Association of Optometrists pays tribute to remarkable Chair and Councillor, Kevin Thompson

It is with profound sadness that the Association of Optometrists announces the passing of Kevin Thompson, previous AOP Chair and Councillor whose contribution to the optometry profession and the organisation was nothing short of remarkable.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones at this deeply difficult time.

Throughout his time in office, Kevin was a driving force for optometrists and dispensing opticians – championing their interests, amplifying their voice, and working tirelessly to ensure the profession continued to grow in strength and influence.

Kevin’s vision and dedication helped shape the direction the AOP and the profession and he leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be felt for years to come.

Reflecting on Kevin’s work at the AOP, Emma Spofforth, Past Chair said: “A person who did so very much for our profession behind the scenes and within the AOP during his extensive time as a Councillor. We will miss the charismatic, quick-witted and endlessly good-humoured approach that Kevin brought to every meeting, conversation and challenge. We have lost an amazing advocate for our profession.”

Colleagues across the AOP Board, Council, staff and partner organisations remember Kevin’s generosity of spirit and his genuine care for the members he served.

Nizz Sabir, AOP Chair remarked that: “The profession is stronger, more united and better positioned for the future because of the work Kevin did – his influence sits in all corners of our sector and his legacy will endure.”

Kevin served on the AOP’s Council for almost two decades, first joining in 2007, he was subsequently elected to the Board in 2009 before becoming Chair from 2015 to 2017 and rejoining the AOP’s Council in 2020.

During his career Kevin owned over 32 practices in the north east of England and in Scotland. Beyond optometry he was a sub-postmaster, entrepreneur, musician, community radio founder, school governor, listed-building renovator and Mayor of Alnwick.

Earlier this year, Kevin was presented with the Peter Yeo Medal, the highest accolade given by the AOP in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to optometry. Reflecting on his tenure at the time, Kevin remarked: “None of this of course would be possible without my family. I would like to thank them for their enduring patience over the years spent at the AOP, which has seen my sons grow from tiny toddlers to three grown men that I am immensely proud of.”

On behalf of the entire optometry community, the AOP extends its heartfelt gratitude for the remarkable contribution made, the positive change driven, and the countless people supported throughout Kevin’s time with us.
