Optometry Today ’s latest essential guide for locum optometrists

The second instalment in Optometry Today ’s successful series for locum optometrists is available, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision

Optometry Today (OT), is launching the second edition of its popular locum guide – an evergreen resource designed to support locum optometrist members.

The Locum Briefing, produced in collaboration with the Association of Optometrists (AOP) and in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision, is free and will be issued in the June/July edition of OT, alongside featured content in the journal’s newly created online supplements hub.

Locum optometrists, as well as those considering locum work, will find the 20-page guide covers practical advice including seven essential habits for safe practice and navigating the rising cost of living. Clinical experts also share their guidance on using the latest imaging technology to its full potential, contact lenses for every life stage, and myopia management.

Wendy Steele, AOP Commercial Director said: “With over 40% of optometrists already working as a locum we’re keen to enhance our package that supports this aspect of the workforce. As a locum you face different challenges. This guide aims to strike a balance between offering advice on the practicalities of delivering care alongside the clinical areas that will enable you to thrive.”

Locum optometrist and a contributor to the guide, Pete Sharma, said: “One thing I know from personal experience as a locum is the value of shared experiences and tools that support your day-to-day practise. This resource from OT offers both – I’m sure it will be something AOP locum members will return to time and again.”

Sheetal Patel at Johnson & Johnson Vision said: “We appreciate that locums are an important part of the eyecare sector and have unique educational needs. Therefore, we are very happy to be able to continue, develop and evolve our partnership with the AOP and OT in providing tailored support to locums. The guide is one element of a diverse range of resources, tools, services and education aiding locums to continue to deliver great patient care.”

The AOP offers a range of support services to over 5,700 locum members, including targeted locum events and webinars, the AOP locum register and vacancies list, and the AOP Locum logbook online. Johnson & Johnson Vision is a key partner in supporting many of these activities.

Locum members can also access the AOP’s general legal helpline and tax investigation cover.
