Could you join our team of media spokespeople?

If you live in or around London and are confident speaking about eye health, we’d like to hear from you

Spokeperson recruitment

With more interest than ever in our eye health campaigns, we’re looking for an optometrist member to support our team of media spokespeople.

As a volunteer spokesperson you’ll be a key part of our work to promote eye health and give a human voice to our campaigns. Providing interviews for local and national radio and TV, you’ll be answering questions on areas of public interest, from sight tests for drivers to children’s vision and common eye diseases.

What you’ll gain

As a spokesperson you’ll have the unique opportunity to be part of some of the biggest eye health campaigns in the UK. We’ll provide you with training and briefings to help you feel confident in your role and will cover travel expenses incurred as part of your work.

What we’re looking for

The role is open to all practising optometrist members and you don’t need to have any prior experience in media work to apply. Instead, you’ll need to be confident when speaking publicly, have a knack for helping others understand complex issues, and be committed to supporting the AOP’s policies and eye health messages.

As most recording studios are based in London, you’ll need to live and work in or around the capital and be able to make interviews at short notice. As part of a team of AOP spokespeople, we expect requests to varying from once every few months during quiet periods, to a handful during key campaign weeks, which take place once to twice a year.

You’ll also need to be able to attend our media training day on Wednesday 24 April at the AOP offices in Clerkenwell, London.

How to apply

We’re asking interested members to submit a two-minute video in which they speak about an eye health issue we’ve chosen. Our press and policy teams will then select the successful candidate after reviewing the video and supporting information. Email [email protected] to find out more and to request an application form.

Applications close at midday on Monday 8 April.
