Technicians urged to study for diploma

The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (WCSM) is raising awareness that the next Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians (SMC Tech) course will start in September.

The course is for people who want to become senior technicians and supervisors within an optical laboratory, either in a practice or a manufacturing environment.

The two-year distance learning course is offered by ABDO College. There is no classroom learning and no residential requirement, the WCSM is highlighting.

WCSM clerk and chief executive, Helen Perkins, said: “The SMC (Tech) qualification was designed for those working in optical laboratories and manufacturing.

“With all the changes in the sector, it seems that fewer managers and practice owners know about the existence of this qualification and the ABDO College courses that will help to prepare candidates for the exams. This is particularly the case for optometrists and dispensing opticians who may find themselves in charge of a practice with a laboratory facility.”

The course is supported by three workshops during the year and a revision workshop that students are recommended to attend.

Diploma students are assessed at the end of year one and year two. They must pass the year one examinations before continuing on to year two.

In year two students choose either a surfacing or glazing pathway and complete a practical project, as well as assignments and the final written and practical examinations.

All new qualifiers are invited to attend a special WCSM presentation ceremony in London to receive their awards. The qualification is regarded by many as the gold standard for the optical industry and enables qualified technicians to use the letters SMC (Tech) after their name.
