Clinical interest in myopia continues to grow with an increasing range of options available to manage its progression and help mitigate for the risks associated with the condition.

This event offers a full day of education delivered by experts from around the world offering key insights on the evidence-based management of myopia in clinical practice.

The programme has seven live webinars, each offering one interactive CPD point. Delegates are invited to attend the full programme or choose individual sessions based upon their clinical interests.

MAYopia Day - Session 5 - Communicating with patients and monitoring the progression of myopia in optometric practice

This lecture will discuss the growing prevalence of myopia on a global scale and how urgent intervention is required to manage this condition. It will cover the importance of clinicians detecting early signs of myopia, and discussing with their patients, the importance of myopia management and various methods available. Myopia carries a higher risk of certain sight-threatening conditions that many patients, and their parents, may not be aware of. The importance of axial length measurement in the detection and treatment of myopia will be covered and how best to convey this to patients and their parents.

Learning outcomes

  • Practitioners will be able to communicate effectively with patients and their parents about myopia management using an evidence-based approach

Sarah FarrantSarah Farrant graduated from Cardiff University. Sarah has a great passion for her work, which is reflected in the wide variety of different interests she has within the profession. At its heart is her drive to continually push her practice forward with the latest technology and specialist clinics. She has undertaken a number of additional qualifications and is a leading national expert in therapeutics and dry eye management and represents the UK as an Ambassador for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS).

Sarah previously sat on council for the College of Optometrists for 12 years, is currently on the Executive board of the British Contact Lens Association and is chair of the Somerset Local Optical Committee. She has been instrumental in a number of local and national initiatives in order to improve access education amongst the profession and access to eye care for patients, including setting up the successful Somerset ACES eye scheme. She is also a keen lecturer and regularly teaches other optometrists across the country.
