Risk of closure for charity a “dire outcome” for people with sight loss, say AOP

The 160-year-old charity, Vista, which supports people affected by sight loss, has announced that, despite ongoing efforts to reduce costs and restructure operations, it is at risk of closing due to a critical funding shortfall.

Responding to the news, Adam Sampson, Chief Executive of the Association of Optometrists (AOP) said:

“Eye care is fundamental to the health and independence of communities across the country, yet the services that provide it are increasingly fragile. When access to care is reduced, it is usually those who are most vulnerable who are affected first and hardest.

“Charities such as Vista are a cornerstone of the community, serving not only the affected individuals but also their families, carers, and wider support networks. It is a lifeline of support, resources and companionship to those navigating sight loss. Losing these services is a dire outcome for vulnerable people.

“Protecting and strengthening these services is not just important, it is essential. Improving access to eye care ensures that people can live independently, stay connected, and receive the support they need before issues become life-altering. Without sustained investment and attention, we risk leaving too many people without the care they depend on.”

In an article in the AOP’s journal, Optometry Today, Vista confirmed that operational changes have helped stabilise its finances but that these measures are not enough to secure its future, stating that the charity has effectively “run out of time and money” to continue delivering its services without urgent additional support.

The charity has set an urgent fundraising target of £2 million, which must be met by an approaching deadline in order to sustain operations. Efforts are already underway to secure this funding, with appeals made to local businesses, corporate partners and philanthropic supporters.

Last week, optometrist Shockat Adam, MP highlighted in Parliament how closure would leave a significant gap in essential services for vulnerable individuals. Adam pressed for urgent Government action in the House of Commons.
