Optometry Today’s new guide for locum optometrists

Fifth edition of Optometry Today’s popular Locum optometrist guide launches

Optometry Today (OT) releases the fifth edition of the Locum optometrist guide, The Key to Success − a professional development resource designed to equip locum practitioners with the skills and insights they need to excel.

Produced in collaboration with the Association of Optometrists (AOP) and in partnership with the Vision team at Johnson & Johnson, the guide draws on the wealth of collective experience within the locum workforce and celebrates the power of community in improving patient care.

Wendy Steele, AOP Commercial Director, said: “Locum optometrists value the freedom and variety their roles bring, yet learning from peers remains central to growth. The locum guide gathers practical advice to support locums at every stage of their careers and fosters a strong sense of community across our membership.”

The guide provides advice on making effective referrals as a locum, building professional connections within practice, establishing trust with new patients, negotiating pay and rates, returning to work after a career break, and understanding the benefits that toric contact lenses can offer patients.

Robyn Marsden, Johnson & Johnson Vision Professional Education and Development Manager, UK and Ireland, said: “Locum optometrists work every day to support eye care in their communities. Johnson & Johnson are committed to ensuring they have the educational resources they need to develop and thrive. Our partnership with the AOP demonstrates the value that we place in tailored professional development for this essential practitioner group.”

The print guide will be distributed to 6000 locum optometrist members alongside the August/September edition of OT. Featured content from the guide will also be available to all members in the online content hub.

The AOP offers a comprehensive suite of support services for locum members, including targeted locum events and webinars, the AOP Locum Logbook and Locum Register, as well as access to the AOP’s general legal helpline and tax investigation cover.
