GOC meets performance standards in PSA review

The AOP responds to the latest findings by the Professional Standards Authority

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) has welcomed the announcement that the General Optical Council (GOC) has met its annual performance targets for a third year.

On Monday, the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) for Health and Social Care published its review of the optical regulator in which it met all 18 of the PSA’s Standards of Good Regulation.

Responding to the review, Scott Shadbolt, Head of Professional Discipline at the AOP, said: “We welcome the latest PSA findings regarding the work of the GOC and it is encouraging that the GOC has continued to meet the PSA Standards of Good Regulation in the latest review period.

“We are however mindful that there remain areas of the GOC’s work that may not fall within the scrutiny of the PSA’s review. The PSA also identified some areas that could be improved on. Over the past year, the AOP have worked closely with the GOC to raise awareness of such areas and we will continue to do so over the next 12 months.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with the GOC to ensure that the regulator continues to operate appropriately and fairly.”

The report covers the period between 1 January and 31 December 2024.
