On stage at 100% Optical: Discussion workshop: A desire to time travel

Nicky Latham, professional affairs lead for myopia management at CooperVision, will consider what it would be like to travel back in time with highly myopic adult patients, and how this might influence treatment of young myopes today

Could you give us an insight into the topic your session will cover?

This session considers the ocular health of a high myope in his mid-40s. I discuss how today’s knowledge could have allowed us to intervene when he was a child, and what effect that could have had on his life.

What are some of the key messages you wish to highlight?

I am passionate about ensuring that every myopic child and their guardians are offered the chance to slow down the worsening of childhood myopia.  The College of Optometrists has recently made myopia management part of its core guidance, and I am keen to help eye care professionals to have a myopia management conversation and consider which solution would be most appropriate for each individual.

Who is this topic for? Who might benefit the most from joining?

I hope that optometrists, contact lens opticians and dispensing opticians who have just started exploring myopia management, or are yet to start, will join this session.

What do you hope the top takeaway will be for attendees?

I want attendees to have the confidence to have the right conversations in practice; myopia management doesn’t have to be complicated. I’d also like them to understand the impact of acting early when it comes to myopia interventions which could potentially improve their patients’ outcomes many years into the future. Children aged eight to 15 when starting the MiSight 1 day treatment experienced a slowing of myopia progression.

2024 marks 10 years of 100% Optical. How do you feel about being part of a milestone year for the optical show?

Last year was CooperVision’s first 100% Optical and it was amazing to see so many clinicians attending an event and so much wonderful CPD on offer. This year I am delighted to be able to bring to 100% Optical Myopia: A desire to time travel. Myopia management has come so far and it’s incredibly exciting to be supporting eye care professionals in this important area. I’m also looking forward to celebrating all of the incredible achievements in our industry over the last 12 months.
