The AOP is offering lapsed and non-members 20% off the membership fee for the rest of 2020.

This is in addition to a 20% reduction in membership fees for existing members, which was announced following the start of the UK lockdown.

The AOP has recognised the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which are affecting many across the optical sector. The membership reductions have been introduced to ensure that as many optometrists can access AOP support as possible.

AOP chief executive Henrietta Alderman highlighted that the membership organisation offers “unrivalled” benefits.

Ms Alderman said: “Due to the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis facing many optical professionals, we are keen to ensure that the benefits of AOP membership and the support that membership provides can be accessed by as many optometrists as possible.

“For this reason, the AOP is offering lapsed members the opportunity to re-join, and non-members the opportunity to join, with 20% off the normal membership fee.”

Ms Alderman added: “The AOP offers an unrivalled package of member benefits for all optometrists, from employed to locums and practice owners. On joining, you’ll receive access to the AOP in-house legal team, expert legal, clinical and regulatory guidance, and the online resources that the AOP has developed to help members during this difficult time.”

Record numbers of members, many of whom have had questions relating to the COVID-19 crisis, have turned to the AOP in recent months. The employment law team is currently advising members on issues including furlough, self-employment, salary, discrimination, redundancy matters, personal protective equipment (PPE), testing times and clinical hygiene.

Lapsed members can re-join by visiting www.aop.org.uk/myaop and logging into their previous account. New members should visit www.aop.org.uk/join. Both can call the AOP membership team on 020 7549 2010 if they have any issues joining online, or if they wish to speak to one of the team.
