AOP non executive board director
Our Board play a critical role for the AOP, advising and overseeing strategic policy and direction, and assisting with leadership and general promotion to support the organisation’s mission and needs.
The Board support the work of the chief executive officer (CEO) and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by the CEO, the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both vital and expected.
Your qualifications and experience
As an optometrist Board member, you will be passionate about the AOP’s mission and have a track record of leadership in the sector and beyond.It is essential that you are an optometrist member of the AOP. You will have extensive and diverse experience in the optical sector, including deep familiarity with the issues affecting the profession and its future. You will have diverse professional/business experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in optical, business, government, or the nonprofit sector, and have an understanding of the duties of a Board director and the ability to discharge them.
You are likely to have an understanding of strategic and operational management issues and familiarity with dealing with significant budgets, prior experience of Board governance, and an awareness of the insurance medical malpractice market.
The role
As a non executive board director, you will be expected to stay informed on Board matters, prepare well for meetings and master relevant papers and other information. You will serve on committees as necessary, making a commitment to active participation in the committee work. You will be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by AOP’s strategy, objectives, and activities, and you will understand the legal responsibilities of a board director and seek to ensure that the organisation discharges its proper duty towards AOP members and fulfils its legal obligations. You will become familiar with AOP’s finances, budget, and financial/resource needs, and you will understand and conform to the policies, procedures and values of the AOP.
The length of term is three years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of two consecutive terms, pending approval of the appointments committee. The Board of Directors typically meets six times a year at the AOP offices. Service on AOP’s Board of Directors is remunerated at the AOP daily rate plus travel and accommodation costs in relation to Board members’ duties.
