A Leicestershire independent has been raising awareness of the risks associated with smoking amongst its patients ahead of Macular Week (26 June-2 July).

Research released by the Macular Society in the lead up to the annual awareness week reported that 53% of people are not aware that smoking can cause blindness.

Working to lower that statistic, Edmonds & Slatter Opticians, is highlighting the harmful effects that smoking can have on the eyes with its patients.

Head optometrist at the independent, which has three practices across Leicestershire, Saagar Hirani emphasised: "Most people realise there's a possibility that you might get lung cancer or another cancer, but they don't know you could lose your sight."

He continued: "If people were more aware that they might lose their sight, I would hope they would be much keener to quit."
