First practice in Scotland to have three IP-qualified optometrists

Cameron Optometry is the only Scottish opticians to have three optometrists who are independent prescribers

Scottish independent Cameron Optometry has become the only practice in Scotland to have three practitioners who are independent prescriber (IP) qualified.

Claire Keith is the practice’s latest optometrist to complete her IP qualification. It took Ms Keith three years to complete the qualification, which allows her to prescribe medications in practice, reducing the need to refer to the GP. She joins colleagues Ian Cameron and Gillian Bruce, who are already IP qualified.

Speaking about the achievement, managing director of Cameron Optometry, Ian Cameron, told OT: “We always pride ourselves on our highly qualified team of optometrists, and this makes us the only optometry practice in Scotland with as many qualified prescribers, joining only a handful of practices in the UK who also have three optometrists who hold the qualification.”

Mr Cameron highlighted that: “This also gives us another opportunity to remind patients that if they have any eye complaints, they should make us the first port of call as we have the most advanced technology available to examine the eyes and are able to prescribe treatment as required.”
