Optical equipment provider Topcon teamed up with private eye care chain Optegra to host a successful professional development evening for practitioners last month (1 July).

The training evening, which was held at Optegra’s Hampshire eye hospital, provided 26 optometrists with training in optical coherence tomography (OCT).

The main presentation was delivered by Optegra’s Debendra Sahu, a specialist retinal consultant at the Hampshire hospital. Topics included analysis of normal and abnormal scans, tips on optimising scan quality, and full glaucoma OCT workup including use of disc, macular and anterior scan protocols.

Attendees also had the opportunity to trial Topcon’s swept source and 3D OCT.

Topcon’s education and clinical affairs manager for UK and Ireland, Dr Rachel Hiscox, said: “Topcon were delighted to get the opportunity to team up with Optegra to provide an evening of OCT education for local optometrists. We hope that all delegates went away with some new skills which can be applied in practice, whether they were brand new to OCT or experienced users.”

Dr Hiscox added: “Topcon looks forward to providing more high quality education in conjunction with Optegra in the future.”

Commenting on the event, business development manager for Optegra Eye Hospital Hampshire, Julieanne Page, said: “The evening was a great success and there was an excellent atmosphere.

Mr Sahu’s talk was extremely informative and interactive and he then mingled with the breakout groups giving help and advice in support of the Topcon team. Optometrists' feedback was very positive and left them feeling much more confident when using their OCT and interpreting results...we are planning more events locally as well as looking to roll this out across Optegra’s other UK hospitals.”

Further events are planned for OCT courses at Optegra’s Hampshire hospital. Sessions are scheduled for 12 August and 16 September. For more information, call 01329 316 737.
