The initiative marks the 50th anniversary since the company released Minims

Bausch + Lomb (B+L) has announced the establishment of Icons of Ophthalmology, an initiative that marks the 50th anniversary of its Minims eye drops range.

Designed to also celebrate individuals globally who have made a difference to ophthalmology, a panel of leading consultant ophthalmologists from across the UK have shortlisted their icons of ophthalmology, each selecting one for every decade that Minims have been available.

Shortlist ophthalmologists include cataract surgery pioneer Charles Kelman, ocular oncology expert Carol Shields, and an ophthalmologist who worked to eliminate blindness in India, Govindappa Venkataswamy.

Speaking about the initiative, head of pharmaceuticals at B+L, Jenni White, said: “For the last 50 years, B+L’s Minims range has been enabling ophthalmic innovation, and we're celebrating those individuals who have made remarkable advances in the way eye care professionals help to improve patients’ eyesight.”

B+L is now calling on UK practitioners to have their say and vote on the shortlisted icons.

A new video series sharing insight into the achievements of all 20 finalists is available online.

Voting is open until 5 December and the winner will be announced next year.
