Independent optician tests sight of professional rugby players
Independent chain Norville Opticians is testing the eyes of Gloucester Rugby players and staff as part of a ‘unique eye care partnership‘
11 March 2015
The independent optical group in Gloucestershire, which has 11 practices, is carrying out eye examinations on players and staff from Gloucester Rugby, including OCT imaging of the players’ retinas.
Dan Murphy (pictured), a prop for Gloucester Rugby, said: “There is increasing attention being paid to the health of those who take part in contact sports and, speaking as someone who plies his trade in the rough and tumble of the pack, it is reassuring to know that my eyes are being monitored in this way.”
Director of Norville Opticians, Adrian Street, said: “The OCT is available to anyone who is concerned about their long-term eye health. Unfortunately, the test is not part of the NHS eye examination and so we have to charge a nominal fee, but when you consider what it can detect, then it’s well worth the money.”
