Optometrist using an optometer to measure woman's eyes

Good eyesight contributes to a longer, healthier, happier and more active life. Optometrists in the community help older people with their sight and their eye health – and could do even more.

We know that poor eyesight is a risk factor in accidents and injuries for older people. Which is why we’re calling for some simple changes to improve support for older people’s eye health.

Our five asks

  1. Optometrists should be able to certificate vision impairment – giving more patients access to benefits and support
  2. Low Vision Services should be available to all people in the UK, regardless of where they live
  3. Eye care at home (domiciliary eye care) should be easier to provide
  4. Vision checks should be a core part of assessments in frailty and falls services
  5. The public health and disease prevention potential of optometrists should be used to the full.

What are the benefits of the changes we are calling for?

  • Better, more convenient care for older people
  • Preventing ill health
  • Good use of taxpayers’ money
  • Using the full range of eye care professional’s skills to improve outcomes
  • Reducing waiting times and relieving pressure on hospitals.
