New edition of Optometry Today’s locum guide

The resource offers practical tools, peer advice and expert input for locum optometrists working across varied clinical settings

Optometry Today (OT), in partnership with the Association of Optometrists (AOP), releases the sixth edition of its locum optometrist guide, On the move – a free resource produced in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Vison.

The guide features advice from locum practitioners, outlining practical steps for delivering tailored communication and supporting a seamless patient journey. It also highlights the importance of lifelong learning in helping locum optometrists thrive professionally and personally.

Selina Powell, OT Features Editor, said: “Locum practice requires adaptability and clear communication in varied clinical settings. This year’s guide builds on those skills, consolidating insight on the areas locums tell us are most important to their work. The guide will support ongoing professional development and reinforce the delivery of safe and effective care for patients.”

The locum guide places emphasis on community and shared learning, recognising the value of peer insight for practitioners who often work independently. It also covers the role of wellbeing in practice, with locum optometrists describing how microbreaks can help restore balance during busy clinics. Further insight is provided on mentorship and the value of learning from colleagues throughout a career.

Robyn Marsden, Professional Education and Development Manager UK/Ireland at Johnson & Johnson Vision, said: “Every day, locum optometrists make an important contribution to eye care across the UK. Johnson & Johnson is dedicated to helping them develop and succeed by providing relevant educational resources and learning opportunities. Through our partnership with the AOP, we are proud to support tailored professional development designed specifically for the needs of locum practitioners.”

The AOP offers a range of support services for locum members, including locum events and webinars, the AOP Locum Logbook and the AOP Locum Register. Locums also have access to the AOP’s general legal helpline and tax investigation cover.

The guide was sent to locum optometrist AOP members alongside the Flexibility matters October/November edition of OT and is available to access to all on the OT website.
