AOP Awards 2020 - How does it work?

Nominations

Nominations opened at 10am on 1 May 2019 and closed at 5pm on Wednesday 31 July.

For each category, nominators were required to answer three questions as to why they believed the nominee should win the award. They were also asked to provide a biography and supporting photo of the nominee. 

For Frame of the Year, a manufacturer could submit up to three frames, but they had to be different brands. We also strongly recommended sending a physical sample to the AOP offices.

There was the option to provide additional supporting information for the nomination, up to a maximum of two sides of A4 and including anything the nominator felt enhanced their nomination. For more information on supporting information please see the terms and conditions.

Judging

All nominations submitted were reviewed by our expert panel of judges from across the sector. See Meet the judges.

For each category, two judges reviewed the submissions separately, selected a list of finalists and ranked them based on the content of the submission (e.g. 1 = top ranking, 10 = lowest ranking). Please note that not all nominees made it onto the list of finalists.

The lists of finalists were submitted to the Head Judge who combined the scores to create a final judged ranking.
 
The Lifetime Achievement Award was selected by an AOP panel, including our Chief Executive and Chair.

Voting

Voting opened in all categories on 1 October 2019. Thirteen out of 15 categories were open to public vote, with patients and practitioners invited to take part, while Frame of the Year and Product of the Year were voted for exclusively by AOP members.

Online voting was encouraged, but finalists were also able to collect votes from their colleagues, patients and contacts using a hard copy voting form.
 
All votes were verified by Mi-Voice. 

Voting closed at 5pm on Wednesday 19 December 2019 for all categories.

The public vote was converted into a ranking (e.g. 1 = top ranking, 10 = lowest ranking) which was combined with the judges' ranking to determine the winner.

Winners

The winner for each category, excluding the Lifetime Achievement Award, was the finalist with the top combined ranking from the judges and the public vote. 

The winners of the AOP Awards 2020 were announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on Sunday 26 January.
